New editorial design for the TUM Magazine

Quick Read
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the world’s leading universities. In international rankings, TUM regularly ranks among the best German universities. It has liaison offices in San Francisco, São Paulo, Cairo, Mumbai, and Beijing – and even an overseas campus in Singapore. Furthermore, it holds the title of Excellence University and collaborates with Ludwig Maximilian University in four excellence clusters. The restructuring of the magazine portfolio, which previously consisted of several magazines, resulted in a new TUM Magazine encompassing all topics.

Customer Challenge
Based on the initial key points of the editorial concept and the existing corporate design, the name, titles, typography, layout style, and visual language were developed. The aim was to present scientific content in a way that is accessible to a broad readership.

Solution
The magazine concept, developed as a publication series, varied in its editorial formats to convey content through informative fact pages, news pages with short contributions from various fields, illustrative infographics, as well as extensive editorial articles, interviews, and profiles. This resulted in a classic corporate print magazine of around 70 pages, whose production is certified with the Blue Angel eco-label in accordance with sustainable criteria.

Insight & Impact
The first magazine, published in December 2024, was produced in a print run of 80,000 copies and distributed to the entire readership of the previous magazines. Additionally, some of the content was presented interactively in the magazine section of the corporate website.
